4/26/2023: The Library building at the UN Headquarters in New York is temporarily closed as part of an ongoing maintenance. For the weeks to come, they will not have access to their print collection.

For this reason, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library temporarily suspends on-demand scanning, in-person trainings, and the circulation of print library materials.

If the full text is not available from these two sources, continue to locating documents by symbol number, below.

UN documents on Microfiche and Microcard

  1. First, check the United Nations Digital Library.
As of 12/2021, the Digital Library scope note indicates that it includes metadata (document information) for all documents from 1980-1993, with some digitized documents. From 1946 - 1979, there is metadata for some documents and some digitized items.
  2. Next, check the Official Document System Includes born digital documents from 1993, on, and many digitized documents between 1946-1992.
  3. If you don't find it online, we may have it in our Microfiche or Microcard Collections. If we don't have it, you may be able to request a scan of the document from the UN Dag Hammarskold LIbrary.

Microfiche: 1982 - 2009

Request at Reference Desk.

Notes for Reference staff:
From the Olin 106 F area, take the stairs (opposite the 106 F restroom) down one level. Go through the door to the next small room. The Readex UN microfiche cabinets are on the left.

Filing Order in the cabinets:

1982 -- 1991. Items are filed alpha-numerically, by symbol number.

1992 - present. Items are filed first by Readex Year (year filmed), then alpha-numerically within that year. This corresponds to the checklists provided by Readex.

Microcard: 1946 - 1981

Shelved on the Lower Level of Olin Library, on range L092 - A.

The first set of boxes contain the Official Records. In most cases, the boxes with the Official Records will have a large blue dot (or a large round discoloration where once a blue dot stood). Documents are filed alpha-numerically, by symbol  number, but if you're looking for an Official Records, check the United Nations Digital Library.

Following the Official Records, there are boxes and boxes of masthead documents, organized alpha-numerically, by symbol number.

Note: Scanning or Printing from Microfiche and Microcard: Ask for help in the Media Center. Our new micrographic scanners can accommodate microcard.
