Overview of our Print Collection
Most of Olin Libraries Map holdings are in Print form. However, to improve accessibility to our resources, as well as to grow our digital collection, we digitize material from our print collection.
Shelving Layout:
The maps are organized by location and the coverage of each location varies.
Within each location maps are organized first by date (historical maps are first in the folder, with newer maps as you get closer to the bottom of the folders), and if there are any, thematic maps follow those. Thematic maps can be things like hiking maps, traffic/transportation maps, construction maps, etc.
The types of maps we have for each location will vary.
Physical Collection Resources

1. Paper Maps
USGS Topographic Maps
7-1/2 Minute Quadrangles Topographic map type
Shelving Location
The 7-1/2 minute topographic quadrangle maps, or topo quads, for each state are filed around the perimeter of the Map Room, starting on the left as you enter. They are arranged alphabetically by state, and then alphabetically by quadrangle name. Labels on each drawer show the alphabetic range within.
Symbols
This specific map series uses a large number of map symbols, to help you in reading these types of maps a symbol guide(PDF) should be used as a reference.

Note on Paper Maps: Location coverage varies. For example, we have many maps of Ithaca and Cornell but we may have fewer maps coverage for other areas. Major metropolitan areas tend to have larger quantities of maps and more varied types of maps.
