Annotate

As there’s not enough time for a full literature review in this course, we’re going to do an abbreviated version of this called an annotated bibliography. Completion of this tutorial will prepare you for your final assignment.

Citing References in the Proper Format

Now that you have found four articles on your topic, it's time to construct your citations. You will need to gather the following information:

  • Authors
  • Year
  • Article Title
  • Journal Title
  • Volume, Issue and Page Numbers
  • DOI (digital object identifier: a type of permanent URL for articles) - optional if not present

EXAMPLE OF A JOURNAL ARTICLE CITATION in APA FORMAT:

Van Vugt, M., Hogan, R., & Kaiser, R. B. (2008). Leadership, followership, and evolution: Some lessons from the past.  American Psychologist, 63(3), 182-196. doi: 10.1037/0003-66X.63.3.182

APA citation

Citation styles in Wikipedia vary but when in doubt, you can use American Psychological Association (APA) 6th edition style. There are guides for this on the library website. (For information about other citation styles and more help with citations, go to the Citation Management website.)

*TIP: A DOI is a special permanent link to an article. The links that come up in your browser are often temporary; they expire quickly and aren't always available from off-campus.
TIP: Not sure what the full journal title is? Hover over the abbreviated title in PubMed to find it. Not sure how to read a citation? Watch this video for more information.

Why Citation Matters

Proper citation matters! Other people must be able to find the information you found. Also, citing sources properly is part of avoiding plagiarism and upholding the Cornell Code of Academic Integrity. If you don't know whether something needs to be cited or are concerned about accidental plagiarism, check out the tutorial Recognizing and Avoiding Plagiarism.

For more information on and help with citations, check out the video and tutorial , or go to the Citation Management website.

TIP: You can use citation management tools (like NoodleTools or Son of Citation Machine on steroids!) to keep all your citations in one place, access them from any Internet-connected computer, and insert them into your paper in any citation style. For more information, visit the Citation Management website.
