Finding the articles required for this class

Cornell University Library does have access to several of the readings required for this class.  Due to copyright laws and restrictions from the publisher, we cannot legally provide a direct link to the article for you.  We can however, give you a step-by-step guide to access the articles.  The following resources will all be available by using the steps indicated below.

Step #1 - Go to www.library.cornell.edu
Step #2 - Click on "E-Journal Titles"
Step #3 - Search for the journal (in this case it is the Harvard Business Review)
Step #4 - Select the database to view the journal in (in this case it is Business Source Complete)
Step #5 - Use the above citations to browse by year
Step #6 - Use the above citations to browse by volume and issue
Step #7 - Scroll through the results until you find the article.  They will be listed in page order.
Step #8 - Click on the PDF to view and read the article.

Detailed Directions for finding the articles required for this class

Step #1 - Go to www.library.cornell.edu

Step #2 - Click on "E-Journal Titles"

Step #3 - Search for the journal (in this case it is the Harvard Business Review)

If we look at the above citations, each of the articles that you need to read are from a journal called the Harvard Business Review.  If we go to the e-Journal titles tab and type in the name of the journal, we will get a list of all of the databases that allow online access to the journal, including the years for which the journal is available.

Type in Harvard Business Review to see where it is available,

 

Step #4 - Select the database to view the journal in (in this case it is Business Source Complete)

Looking at the results list, the database with the most complete coverage of the Harvard Business Review is Business Source Complete.  Click on the link for Business Source Complete (all 6 articles will be available there).

 

 

Step #5 - Use the above citations to browse by year
Step #6 - Use the above citations to browse by volume and issue

Clicking on the link for Business Source Complete will take us to Harvard Business Review in Business Source Complete.  From here, we have to find the specific articles.  The easiest way to do this is to browse by year, volume, issue and page number.  Let's look at one of the citations.

Porter, M.E. (1996). What is Strategy? Harvard Business Review74(6), 61-78.

In this example, the year is 1996, the volume is 74, the issue is 6 and the pages are 61-78.

Let's take this information and browse by year, volume, issue and page.

Step #7 - Scroll through the results until you find the article.  They will be listed in page order.

For this particular example, the article "What is Strategy?" will be on the second page of results.

Step #8 - Click on the PDF to view and read the article.

 

That's all there is to it!  Please be aware that there are multiple ways to search for and access these articles.  You can go directly to Business Source Complete and search by article title and author's last name, but if you do this some of the searches will give you multiple similar results.  Make sure you select the article from the Harvard Business Review.  Browsing by Journal Title, year, volume, issue and page will ensure you get the correct article every time.
