Introduction to Tactile Learning Materials
With the development of low-cost 3D printers, it's even more possible to include tactile learning materials in your classroom. While we often think of using tactile materials only with Blind or Visually Impaired (BVI) students, they can be helpful for any learner. Multiple options for content representation is a core tenet of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Engaging multiple senses, including touch, helps learners build accurate mental models as they tackle new and complex ideas.
These are just a few resources to inspire and interest you.
Mapping resources
- TouchMapperUsing data from OpenStreetMap, you can use this site to create an STL file to print a tactile map of any location.
- TMAP: Tactile Maps Automated Production"TMAP is a tool to generate tactile street maps. Tactile Maps Automated Production (TMAP) is a project of LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired and Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute."
- Terrain2STLA site that will convert a small terrain area into a printable STL file.
