Make sure your bookmarks are visible. Safari has a favorites bar and a bookmarks sidebar - they are essentially the same thing. You can choose one or the other, they will both work.
In the Menu bar (at the top of the screen), under "View", select "Show Favorites Bar" or "Show Bookmarks Sidebar"
