Introduction

This research guide highlights entry points and major reference resources for the study of popular culture. The boundaries of popular culture are vague. The primary subject encyclopedia, the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, covers "film, television, music, radio, theater, dance, comedy, art, books, magazines, sports, social life, and other subject areas." [Editor's Note in the 2nd edition]

Popular culture research is highly interdisciplinary. No guide to research in this area can be comprehensive. The focus here is on reference sources, primary sources, and popular culture databases.

Please consult the reference staff for detailed guidance on your research topic.
