HIST 2207 Project Guide - Digital CoLab: Using WordPress

This guide is for the ASIAN 2278: East Asian Medical and Martial Arts.

Adding a Page

For this project, you'll need to create pages for each of your interviewees where you can write about their stories, put any photos, video, or audio, and host their timeline. These pages will be displayed in a sidebar of the project so that users of the page can click from one person to the next and read all of the stories.

To create a new page:

  1. Go to blogs.cornell.edu.
  2. Log into WordPress using your NetID and password. If you don't know your password or didn't get an account setup email, email Kiran at kam535@cornell.edu.
  3. Click on My Sites in the top left corner of the screen.
  4. Go to East Asian Medical and Martial Arts.
  5. Click on Dashboard.
  6. Click on Pages on the left sidebar, then New Page.

To edit your page:

  1. Click on All Pages on the left sidebar.
  2. Click on the name of the page you want to edit.
  3. Add images, text, and whatever other content you'd like to add to your page.
  4. Click Save Draft or Update when you're done making changes.

Embedding Your Timelines

The last step you'll want to do on your page for each interviewee is to add your Timeline.js timelines below or above (or wherever you want them) your content. Timeline.js has a guide to publishing your Timeline.js to the web and creating embed code that can go onto your WordPress pages.

To create the embed code:

To add your embed code to your WordPress page:

  1. Navigate to the page you want to edit using the instructions above.
  2. Decide where you want to put your timeline.
  3. Right next to the Publish box on the right side of the screen, you'll see grey buttons: Visual and Text. Click Text.
  4. Copy and paste the embed code from the Timeline.js page.
  5. At the bottom of all of the code on your WordPress page, paste the embed code.
  6. Click Save Draft or Update.

If you switch back to Visual mode, you should now see the timeline embedded on the page. Repeat these steps for each one of your pages/people.

Adding to the About Page

The last part of the project is to add a little two-sentence (or more—it's up to you!) biography and/or blurb about your experiences in the course or your background in medical and martial arts. These blurbs are stored on the About page of the WordPress site. To add your content:

  1. Navigate to the About page using the instructions in the Adding a Page box above.
  2. Click on the page name or Edit button to open the editor.
  3. Anywhere under "About the Students", add a picture of yourself and/or any text content you want to add.
  4. Click the Update button on the right side of the screen.
