The Articles & Full Text feature on the main Library web page allows you to perform simple searches across multiple databases. Because the various databases are structured differently, search results may vary widely. For more precise searching, it's best to search the databases individually. Clicking on the Databases link will display a listing by subject area. The selected resources listed below and to the right may be especially relevant to the content of this course.
Databases for Russian Culture and History
- American Bibliography of Slavic and East European StudiesProduced by the University of Illinois, ABSEES indexes journals, books, dissertations, online resources and selected government publications published in the U.S. and Canada that focus on East-Central Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Union. Subjects covered include anthropology, culture & the arts, economics, education, and geography. Coverage ranges from 1939-present.
- European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (EBSEES)Contains bibliographic citations to scholarly articles, books, etc, relating to Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Union. The cited materials were published in the following West European countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, between 1991 and 2007.
- Historical AbstractsCovers over 1,700 journals published worldwide in over forty languages, with full-text links to many articles. Includes some retrospective coverage of journal issues published prior to 1954.
- Russian Academy of Sciences BibliographiesCovers the social sciences and humanities with topics as diverse as archaeology, economics, history, law, linguistics, literary criticism, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and much more. The database includes citations and abstracts of journal articles, books, manuscripts, and dissertations published primarily in Russia, the republics of the former Soviet Union, and countries in Eastern Europe from 1986 to the present, with two to three updates per year. Original script display is available for journals published in Cyrillic.
- Sociology Source UltimateAn expanded version of SocINDEX, including greater coverage of peer-reviewed journals, international resources and open access titles. Provides citations and direct links to the texts of journal articles, book chapters and conference proceedings, some as far back as 1880. Comprehensive coverage encompassing sub-disciplines and related areas of the social sciences, including labor, crime, demography, economic sociology, immigration, ethnic, racial and gender studies, family, political sociology, religion, development, social psychology, social structure, social work, socio-cultural anthropology, social history, theory, methodology, and more.”
Databases for Literature
- MLA International BibliographyThe premier scholarly bibliography covering languages, literatures, folklore, film and linguistics from all over the world. Online coverage back to 1926. Includes books, articles in books, and journal articles. Does not index book reviews.
- Humanities International IndexProvides citations and abstracts for articles, essays and reviews across the humanities disciplines, as well as original creative works including poems, fiction, photographs, paintings and illustrations. Many links to full text.
- ProQuest One LiteratureFormer name: Literature Online. Offers a full-text collection of poetry, drama, and prose with complementary references sources as well as articles, monographs and dissertations from the Annual bibliography of English language and literature (ABELL); full-text articles from literary journals; and biographical information on widely studied authors.
- Gale LiteratureA literature database combining biographical, bibliographical, and contextual
information on authors and their works (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, and journalism). Includes both textual and visual material from the Dictionary of Literary Biography, Contemporary Authors, and Contemporary Literary Criticism. - Project MUSESearchable database that provides access to the full text of journals and ebooks published by university presses in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. Covers such fields as literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and others.
- JSTORJSTOR is a fully-searchable database containing the back issues of several hundred scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, music, ecology and botany, business, and other fields. It includes the following collections: Arts & sciences I, II and III, General science, Ecology and botany, Business, Language and literature.

- Oxford Art OnlineAn important art encyclopedia encompassing a number of Oxford publications. Entries cover all forms of visual art. Illustrated.
- Art & Architecture SourceOffers full text plus abstracts and indexing of an international array of peer-selected art journals.
