Biologist Rachel Carson's 1962 book "Silent Spring" researched the deleterious effect of DDT pesticide use on the chain of life, dramatically raising conservation awareness, environmental protection concerns, and arousing the wrath of the big chemical producers. Her previous award-winning book, The Sea Around Us (1951), about the disposal and presence of radioactive wastes in the ocean,
was also very influential
