Introduction

Welcome to the World Expos and Olympic Games: Mega‐events and City Media Course Guide! This library guide provides resources for Dr. Jennifer Minner's CRP 3853/6690 special topics course exploring effects of Mega-events on the production of spaces, legacies, and public imagination. 

Course Objectives are...

  • Gaining an understanding of the history of World Expos and Olympic Games and how they relate to city imaginaries, public life, urban space, and national and city branding.   
  • Learning about urban theories and planning and preservation practices related to mega‐event planning.   
  • Appreciating and analyzing media, including films made for, about, or produced as resistance to mega‐events and media coverage and how this reflects city life and social relations.   
  • Gaining a nuanced and in‐depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities in preserving, interpreting, and adapting urban spaces at former Expo and Olympics sites. 
  • Research methods related to social impacts of and approaches to tourism, recreation and leisure, public history, and media studies.
