First strategy:

  1. Open the Library Catalog
  2. Search for "sudden infant death syndrome" and use the pull-down menu to select "subject"
  3. Under Limit Your Search, you will see various options. You can restrict results to a particular date range, or to books. You can also look under Genre and under "Subject", and "more" to limit to "prevention," "grief," etc.
  4. Try also searching for "cot death" or "crib death."  Put parentheses around these phrases, or search as a phrase.

Second strategy:

  1. Open the Library Catalog
  2. Enter the phrase "sudden infant death syndrome" and use the pull-down menu to select "subject browse" to   browse for "sudden infant death syndrome" as a subject. 
  3. This will bring up a list of all the subject subheadings under SIDS in alphabetical order.

IV. Find current “popular” (i.e. written for the general public, rather than for specialists) articles about SIDS.

Finding Current Articles:

  • Database:  Proquest Research Library

    Add your search terms: "SIDS" or "sudden infant death syndrome" ;
    Or, enter these terms and use the pull-down menu to select "document title";
    Under Source type, select Magazines;
    Under Publication Titles, select "more" to select specific magazines;
    If you wish, use the date limits on the right to restrict to a particular date range.

  • Database:  Access World News
    Select a geographic region, e.g. the United States;
    Add some search terms;
    There will be thousands of results just searching for "SIDS" or "sudden infant death syndrome" in any field;
    Try using the pull-down menu to limit your search terms to the Headline or to the Lead/First paragraph. You can laso limit to a narrower date range.  Compare articles from the last three months to articles from 30 years ago.  When do articles on SIDS begin to appear?
