State Census Information: A Research Guide: Introduction

Data from historical state-level censuses are more difficult to find than U.S. Census data. Here are reference sources and locations for state census data in our collections. Click on the TABS to access each section in this guide.

Introduction

In addition to the decennial censuses conducted by the the United States government and the Census Bureau, individual states also have conducted censuses. This Web page pulls together reference materials about censuses conducted by the states, not census data about states collected by the federal government.

In addition to sources of general information about state censuses, I have included more detail about the state censuses of New York and how to access the data from those censuses. Because of local interest, I have included even more detail about the state census data available for Tompkins County, New York.
