Social Media: Guide to Searching Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Videos, Images, etc.: Welcome

Tips & Tricks to searching current and "historical" social media content.

Social Media

This guide provides resources and strategies to find current and "historical" digital & social media.

Thanks to the social web, people can share their thoughts, videos, pictures, and creative works easily with others. We can now watch political and social events unfold from the perspectives of the participants and "citizen journalists" on the ground. But how do we find this ephemeral content later?

Twitter, for example, currently only provides a search of tweets within the last 10 days. Google doesn't access Twitter's data archive either. Some new search engines, e.g. Topsy, specialize in social media but the results accessible for free are limited. Internet Archive's Archive-IT projects capture specific web pages, e.g. a Twitter user's stream, over specified date ranges.

Use this guide to explore all of your options when you are researching social media content.
