In this video, the artist Kara Walker describes the creative evolution of her monumental public project, A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby (2014), which she built at the Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, NY. The factory was destined to be demolished to make way for condominiums.
In her Manhattan studio, Walker explains the extensive research that fueled her inspiration, and how she ended up with the idea of a colossal sugar-coated sphinx.
During class, we'll just watch part of this video, produced by Art21, but you can watch the whole thing when you have more time. Art21 has made many other great videos of artists explaining their creative processes--many are online or on CDs available from the Annex Library.
