Find books in the stacks

Icelandic Collection

When the term "Icelandic" appears before an Olin call number, usually you can ignore it and treat it as a regular call number and go to the appropriate floor in Olin.

Except in the case of call numbers beginning with P.  These "Icelandic" call numbers are on the 3rd floor of Olin, tucked into a corner to the left when you enter the stacks.

"Icelandic" in combination with "Kroch Rare and Manuscripts" means the book or manuscript is rare, cannot be checked out, but you can consult it in the Kroch Library.

Useful Tips

Use the Library Catalog's guided keyword search

Search box 1:
type Viking? Norse Northmen Scandinavia?
set the pull down menu at "any of these"

Search box 2:
type a term or terms relating to your topic

? finds variants of a word  Viking? finds Viking and Vikings

Using the Library Catalog to find Books

The CU Library Catalog

  • Includes the holdings of 19 Cornell University libraries (over 7 million items)
  • Contains records for books, DVD's/videos, sound recordings, magazines/newspapers/journals, computer files, government documents, manuscripts and archives, maps, musical scores, and more

Search Tips for the Catalog

Sample Library of Congress subject headings (and terms):

Vikings
Vikings--Ireland--Dublin
Great Britain History Anglo-Saxon period, 449-1066
America--Discovery and exploration--Norse

TIP: To retrieve a browsable list of subject headings for the medieval period of a modern nation (especially early medieval) --using the basic search in the CU online catalog, choose subject heading, then type the nation, then history. This will produce a list containing such essential headings as:

Denmark History To 1241
Ireland History To 1262
Dublin (Ireland) History
Scandinavia History Sources
Great Britain History Anglo-Saxon period, 449-1066

Be aware that additional material, sometimes better material, can be found using the medieval (or ancient) name of a place as a subject or keyword, for instance--Gaul, Northumbria, Holy Roman Empire, Florence.
