Library Catalog Tips

Tip 1: Your first seach should be a very general keyword search.

Tip 2: Never use a, an, or the when searching for a title.

Tip 3: Always use the long view to review subject headings.

Tip 4: If a record displays "Networked Resource" as a location, it is usually available online.

Tip 5: Always pay attention to the call numbers and note whether the material is shelved in the regular, oversized (+), or double oversized (++) sections.

Finding Books and Journals Shelved in Olin Library

Using the Library Catalog

The Library Catalog contains records for holdings in all campus libraries: books, journals, visual media, maps, music scores, archival material, etc.  It does NOT contain records for individual articles in journals (use periodical databases to find those). Material is cataloged by subject using Library of Congress Classification, and records contain LC Subject Headings to describe content.  You can use the Subject Search in the Catalog for particular headings.  Some useful subject headings for this class include:

LATIN DRAMA
LATIN DRAMA (COMEDY)
THEATER--ROME
COMEDY
COMEDY FILMS
COMEDY FILMS--HISTORY AND CRITICISM
SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM, 1564-1616--COMEDIES
SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM, 1564-1616. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Also, material about specific dramatists can be found by searching their names as Subjects, for example:

PLAUTUS
MARX BROTHERS

Look for the CRITICISM AND INTERPRETATION sub-heading after the writer's name.

You can also find books on a particular subject by browsing the library stacks in the area in which the Library of Congress Classification number for that subject is shelved. English literature is found in the PR class, American literature in PS.
