Subject vs Keyword

subject words = less hits & better

keywords = more hits & sometimes worse

A keyword is "find the word anywhere"--title, author, notes, description, publisher, etc.

Useful Tips

Use the Library Catalog's guided keyword search

For instance--

Type in search box 1:
hungary history
set the pull down menu to "subject"

Type in search box 2 and 3:
words/synonyms associated with your topic
when appropriate, set the middle pull down menu to "any of these"

Terms as keywords will find more than terms as subject.

Beyond Cornell

Using the Library Catalog to find Books

The Cornell Library Catalog

  • Includes the holdings of 19 Cornell University libraries (over 7 million items)
  • Contains records for books, DVD's/videos, sound recordings, magazines/newspapers/journals, computer files, government documents, manuscripts and archives, maps, musical scores, and more

Search Tips for the Catalog

The key to effective searching is awareness of the Library of Congress subject headings. They are nation-state-centric and period-centric. Terms are generally plural. Any given topic will have many overlapping subject headings.

Some typical examples of Library of Congress subject headings (and terms) for history:

Austria--History--1867-1918
Europe, Central
Europe, Eastern
Bohemia--Economic Conditions
Poland--Commerce
Hungary--History--Bibliography
Austria--Social Conditions--19th century
Reformation in Art
Monsters in Literature
German Literature--History and Criticism
World War, 1939-1945
World War, 1914-1918
Armenian Massacres
Archives--Russia (Federation)--Moscow--Directories
Women --Bulgaria

Requesting Books from Elsewhere

For BOOKS already checked out, or that we don't have:

Borrow Direct

Click on the link above, connect to Borrow Direct, search for the book and if it's available from another Ivy League university, we will have it shipped to Cornell. Borrowing period is one month. Books arrive in 3-4 business days. (This service is for BOOKS only).

For items (books, articles, microfilm) we don't have:

Interlibrary Loan Services

If Cornell Library does not have an item you need, Use ILLiad (InterLibrary Loan Internet Accessible Database) to request that we borrow materials from other libraries. Loan period is usually one month. Items can arrive in as little as a few days to a couple of weeks.

For items at another campus library or the Library Annex, use the "Request" button inside the Library Catalog and choose Library to Library Delivery.
