Where are the Books?

Areas of the library where books are stored are called "stacks." Most books in the humanities are shelved in Olin and Uris Libraries by call number, according to their Library of Congress classification. The guides below will show you which call numbers are on which floor.  Pay special attention to the presence of plus (+) and double-plus (++) signs, since they indicate that the book is in an oversize section.

To find books by author, title, subject heading or keyword, you'll need to search the Library Catalog...

Searching the Library Catalog

From the Library Gateway, click on the link to the Library Catalog.

If you know the title of the book you want, just enter it in the box and highlight Title.  For example:

Here's the catalog record for the book Narcissism and the Novel by Jeffrey Berman. Display the Long View of the record to see the Subject Headings. Clicking on any one of them will launch a search for that heading.

To find books about an author, enter the author's last name, first name and then highlight Subject Heading (e.g., wilde, oscar). On the list of subject headings that results, look for the subheading "criticism and interpretation."

Use Guided Keyword searching to enter words to combine two or more concepts in a single search, e.g., freud AND narcissism:
