Overview
A vast array of scientific information is available at your fingertips, but how do you pinpoint what you need quickly and efficiently? Survey the traditional and electronic information resources available in the physical sciences and learn search techniques and strategies in this hands-on course.
Course Goals
- Be proficient in using a variety of physical sciences related indexing and information tools, including Chemical Abstracts, Beilstein Crossfire, and the Web of Science.
- Experience the complimentary role of these resources in providing a variety of information on chemical research, properties, reaction methodology, etc.
- Develop a critical approach to researching scientific information.
- Keep current and organized with reference management techniques.
- Understand the publication process in the physical sciences, including citation analysis and copyright issues.
Grading Policy
The grade for this course will be "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory".
To earn a "satisfactory" grade, a student must attend all 8 class sessions and complete the assignments for each class. Whenever possible, we will plan time in class to work on assignments. If you do miss a class, contact the instructor to schedule a make-up session. Lecture notes, handouts and assignments will be posted on the course web site following each class.
Assignments can be turned in at the end of class or anytime during the following week at the circulation desk in the Physical Sciences Library. There is no penalty for late assignments, however it is to your benefit to complete them as quickly as possible for instructive feedback. Working together on assignments is encouraged, but each student must turn in his/her own work.
