Finance Jobs -- Career Research for MBAs

interview

Welcome to the Finance Jobs -- Career Research guide for MBAs brought to you by the Management Library and the Career Management Center.

This guide is designed to guide you through the best research sources and strategies to land the perfect finance job or internship.  If you have any ideas for improving this guide, please let us know!

Though this guide targets MBAs, most of the information is applicable to any Cornell student engaged in the hunt for a position in finance.

Which type are you?

Typically, MBAs find jobs via one of two means:

  1. Through on-campus recruiting, or
  2. Via an independent job search.

For on-campus recruiting, you want to know a few key things about the company in advance. The library can help you answer questions such as:

  1. What has been written about ABC Company in the past 14 days?
  2. Who are the key executives in this firm?
  3. Which firms are the company's top peers?
  4. Have any recent analyst reports been written about the company?

For independent job searchers, you will will want to answer the above questions and may need to create lists of companies to target.

In either case, talk to 2nd years about their internship experiences.  What did they like?  What did they learn?  They'll have a great deal of "on the job" advice to share.
