What are digital research tools?

Software for retrieval, organization, display and information sharing in the humanities. Many online applications are free, easy to use, stable, require no installation and will function on any computer with an internet connection.

Think data visualization, mapping,  word clouds, blogs and feeds, citation and PDF managment, note-taking...

Digital Research Tools (DiRT)

"Bamboo DiRT is a tool, service, and collection registry of digital research tools for scholarly use. Developed by Project Bamboo, Bamboo DiRT makes it easy for digital humanists and others conducting digital research to find and compare resources ranging from content management systems to music OCR, statistical analysis packages to mindmapping software." Crowdsourced.

Before Bamboo DIRT there was just plain DIRT which still may be useful, although it is no longer being updated.

Digital Toolbox

The Infoclio.ch digital toolbox is a managed list of selected digital tools which may be a great starting place.  Although the annotated lists are in French, German and Italian, each link leads to English language content. Infoclio.ch is the web portal for Swiss historians.)
