Use and Handling of Older Materials

1.  Please wash your hands before using old or rare materials.

2.  If removing the book from a shelf, please do not pull it from the top edge of the spine, but lift it gently off the shelf.

3.  If the binding seems fragile, please use foam book supports or hold the book open at an angle so that the spine does not crack.

4.  If the paper is yellowed, turn pages carefully.  Do not bend the corners.

5.  Take care when photocopying not to press the book to firmly against the glass.  If you are afraid of damaging the books, please consult the Preservation Staff.  They have scanning equipment and an edge copying machine which allows pages to be copied at an angle.
