Write an essay (3 – 4 pages) on the topic below. Use 1” margins and a font such as 12-point Times. Please remember to staple the pages together. Put your last name in front of the page number at the top right corner of each page.
Develop your own original argument for this paper. Write in your own scholarly voice. The essay should have an effective title that evokes your handling of the topic, an introduction that establishes the problem your paper intends to solve, a clear and meaningful thesis, logical and precise arguments to support your thesis—including analysis to substantiate and advance your claims, well-constructed paragraphs that begin with topic sentences and follow logically from one another, and a conclusion that does not merely sum up your argument but also clarifies its significance.
Discuss how a scene from Georg Kaiser’s Gas I interacts and engages with your chosen aspect of contemporary (Expressionist) German culture. The assignment will involve researching one contemporary artist or artwork in visual art, music, literature, theater, dance, or film.
(a) Define your artist or artwork for the purposes of your argument. Be sure to include the artist’s name and/or the title of his/her work, date of creation and other information of relevance, and a specific aspect or aspects that are relevant to your subsequent paragraphs.
(b) Explain how two specific formal elements of a scene from Gas I draw on, complicate, parody, etc., aspects of your movement. Hint: Two paragraphs, each of which discusses one formal element and one aspect of your movement.
