Polymers in SciFinder

There are many unique rules and special tips for where and how to find information on polymers in the SciFinder Chemical Abstracts database.

Polymers in SciFinder

Over 1.5 million polymers in SciFinder!

CAS assigns a specific CAS Registry Number® for each polymer based on:

  • Monomers
  • Structural repeating units (SRU)
  • Manual registration (unknown/proprietary composition)

Polymer Record Rules

Polymers have special rules for their records in SciFinder:

  1. The CAS Registry Number for a polymer is specific to the composition of building blocks (monomers) of the polymer
  2. Individual chemical records for the monomers are listed as Alternate Registry Number(s). This can be helpful to find additional information on the specific chemistry of the monomer components.
  3. The chemical records for monomers that are also part of SRU records will list the SRU as the Preferred Registry Number. This can be helpful for identifying polymers containing these components.
  4. Polymers with specified stereochemistry (tacticity) are registered separately and have separate records. All stereo-isomers will be retrieved with component formula searches.
  5. Block, diblock, triblock (etc.), graft or alternating polymers are registered separately and have separate records. All forms will be retrieved with component formula searches.
  6. Post-treated polymers (hydrogenated, chlorinated, sulfonated, sulfurized) are registered separately. All processed fomulations will be retrieved with component formula searches.
  7. The molecular weight (distribution), number of repeating units, component ratio, physical characteristics, or initiators or catalysts used do not influence the registration.

Polymer Formulas

Polymer records have unique formats for molecular formula, based on either the component monomers or structural repeating units.

  • Monomer Formulas: addition polymers and most condensation polymers include the formula(e) of the monomers within brackets and closed with an “X”
    • Homopolymer: monomer in parentheses with “x”.
      (C3H6)x
    • Copolymer: monomers separated by dots in parentheses with “x”.
      (C15H16O2.C3H5ClO)x
  • SRU Formulas: structural repeating units of symmetric condensation polymers include the formula of the repeating unit within brackets and closed with an “N”
    • SRU: SRU in parentheses with “n”.
      (C10H8O4)n
    • End Groups: single molecular formula following SRU formula.
      (C3H6O)n C6H16N2O
