While this guide will provide you with a lot of critical information, it is not comprehensive, so it's important that you and your team are asking questions regarding the gaps in your research. Writing a Business Plan?  Here is a sample research strategy:


Business News Search


  • Use Factiva to simultaneously search publications such as Business Week, Wall Street Journal and New York Times plus over  20,000 news sources from more than 159 countries in 22 languages, and more than 400 continuously updated newswires.

Trade and Scholarly Publications 


Industry Research


  • Use Business Insights: Essentials and Factiva to locate Gale Industry Reports and Datamonitor industry profiles respectively
  • Locate market research at an industry level - global or national using Passport
  • Apart from google, use Hoovers to find a list of important trade associations for every industry
  • Use BizMiner for an overview of an Industry and for Financial Benchmarks.
  • eStatement Studies can also be used to Benchmark Industry Financials.

Market Research Data


  • Conduct demographic research  especially if your potential customer is very local or regional.  Use resources such as SimplyMap, American FactFinder and consumer expenditure survey.
  • Finally, use Mintel Oxygen to breath life into your market research with powerful and compelling consumer behavior data, psychographics and consumer surveys.
